Storyline:
The story is set on the late 1950s. Its about Miriam “Midge” Maisel who is a happily married woman with two kids. Her life is perfect as she is from an upper class Jewish family in America. Life seemed like a fairy tale from the beginning. But everything shatters when her husband, Joel leaves her for his secretary. She couldn’t believe him and told him he couldn’t leave her and the kids. But Joel left anyway. Even her parents start accusing her maybe she couldn’t be a good wife. As everything seemed to fall apart and becomes lonely, she gets drunk and goes to the Gaslight Cafe wearing a coat over her night gown.
She gets on the stage and gives a fantastic stand up comedy performance while being drunk. Suddenly she takes off her coat and her exposed night gown made an uncomfortable circumstance. She gets arrested. There she meets another stand up comedian, Bruce who also got arrested for inappropriate words. After getting bail Midge bails him too. They team up for stand up comedy. One the other hand, the Gaslight Cafe employee Susie convinces her to give more performance in the cafe. Her new life starts. She visits various cafés to learn more. She also gets a job in a cosmetics counter of a high end departmental store. Although her parents didn’t like the idea but Midge couldn’t be unemployed forever. She had to do something for herself and be strong. The story moves forward. The season reveals that Joel secretly comes to see her show and realises thatvshe is really talented. He also realises his mistake. Here Midge fixes her stage name as Mrs. Maisel.
The series is an amazing show that depicted life from a different point of view. Though in a comedy style but there are lots of serious stuff going on. How a woman becomes empowered on her own with the discovery of her hidden talent was incredible. She also stated in several occasions that she is also a mother. So her role as a single mother in the 50s American life is represented beautifully. This show is worth a shot.
